HOLLY POND —
Herman Nail has been busy pulling double duty this week.
In addition to fulfilling his role as mayor, he’s also been Holly Pond’s handyman.
Digging holes and pouring concrete made its way on his list of things to do, as the Holly Pond Historical Society prepares to unveil the Guy Hunt historical marker Sunday.
“It’s something I think is very rare, but with saying that, it’s well deserved for the person we’re doing it for,” Nail said.
The event will take place at 2 p.m. at the Guy Hunt Museum and Library located at 60 Lyons Park Road, and comes just months after the grand opening of the facility.
“I think it’s something our community and Cullman county can be proud of ,” Nail added.
Hunt, who served as Alabama’s governor from 1987-1993, was a Holly Pond native and Holly Pond High School graduate. Before being elected governor, he served as probate judge of Cullman County. He died in 2009 after a battle with cancer.
The museum features items from Hunt’s days as governor, such as the Rolodex he used while in office, as well as numerous photos. In addition, a portion of the museum is dedicated to the history of Holly Pond.
The 5,200 square-foot brick building also features a public library and a civic meeting area. Currently, work is still being done inside of the library, such as getting books ready for shelves, Nail said he hopes to have it open soon.
“We wanted this to be a place where kids can come to the library and do work, but in the process see and learn the history of Holly Pond and Guy Hunt,” he said in an earlier interview. “It’s a win-win for the whole community.”
