Earlier this year, Javon Daniel spent numerous hours trying to find enough food to stock the Cullman Caring For Kids Food Bank.
Shelves were so bare, those associated with the non-profit organization had to cut back on what they were giving.
However, with the outpouring by many in the community during the Cullman Times Cares & Shares food drive in October, as well as other contributors, families who receive help from the agency will be able to have a hearty meal this Thanksgiving.
“We’ve seen an increase in the number of people getting food,” said Daniel, who serves as the director of the organization. “But hopefully we won’t have to cut back on what we give out.”
For each family that comes in, each one receives one 25-pound bag of food and an additional grocery bag. On average, Daniel said the food bank sees 500 families a month, though that number is a little higher than normal in the summer and during the holidays.
“This time of year, things start to pick up,” Daniel said. “All this month the waiting room has been full.”
Today is the last day the food bank will be open until after the Thanksgiving holiday. Hours of operation are from 9 a.m. until noon, and 1-3 p.m. Those wishing to make donations can drop off food on Monday, Tuesday and Friday when the food bank is open.
