Authorities on lookout for suspect who impersonated police officer

Cullman County Sheriff Mike Rainey is urging local residents to be on the lookout for someone suspected of impersonating a police officer.

Rainey said Alabama State Troopers received a phone call at 10:15 Tuesday night from a woman saying she had been pulled over by a white male driving a late ‘90s to early 2000s silver Chevrolet Impala with two small blue lights in the grill and a 64 tag. The incident happened on Interstate 65 southbound near the 297 mile marker.

"People need to be aware this can happen," Rainey said.

The woman described the man to be in his early 40s and wearing a dress shirt, tie and a baseball cap with police stitched on the front.

Rainey said the woman told state troopers she was asked by the man to get out of her vehicle, but she refused. When asked to see his badge, the woman told troopers he failed to show it to her.

While his department does have several employees who wear regular clothes on the job instead of a uniform, Rainey said they all wear badges.

"We do have a lot that are plain-clothes officers," Rainey said. "So we ask the public to be aware of that, and if they're a legitimate law officer, they will have a badge."

He added should anyone see the man described, or the vehicle to call the Sheriff's Office at 734-0342.
