CULLMAN —
After accumulating nearly half a million dollars in technology grants in the last five years, Cullman City Schools added another $100,000 recently thanks to the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC).
The funds will be used for tablet computers, specifically iPads, and technological training for system personnel.
“We are extremely pleased about getting the grant from ARC, and that is something the governor and Congressman Aderholt have to approve, so we just recently received a letter from the governor’s office announcing we had gotten it,” Superintendent Dr. Jan Harris said. “We have always been good stewards of that money, and we look forward to using that for technology and training labs.”
Harris said the iPads will be used in classrooms across the city system, for everything from research to reading.
“Different schools will be using them in different ways, and we’re very excited because we haven’t purchased very many to date,” she said. “For example, at West Elementary they’re using iPads to help with the language barrier with English Language Learners (ELL) students, at Cullman High they are using iPads as e-readers in the library. We have teachers using them in the class for instruction and collaborative work, as well as a research tool.”
