Phelan man sentenced for knife attack

56 other plea deals processed

CULLMAN — A Phelan man charged with assaulting his father, leaving him with multiple stab wounds in December of last year, will be spending time in prison.

Joshua Lee Chaney, 24, pleaded guilty last week in Cullman County Circuit Court to charges of second-degree assault. He was dealt a 10-year sentence of imposed confinement.

Sheriff’s investigators say Chaney stabbed his father, Rickey Lee Chaney, who was asleep on a sofa at his home. Chaney's father had reportedly hidden components used to manufacture methamphetamine from his son, which led to the altercation. Chaney then allegedly stabbed his father with a pocket knife multiple times. The father suffered at least five wounds during the attack and was later admitted to Cullman Regional Medical Center.

Reports say the younger Chaney left the home he shared with his father after the fight, but later returned to retrieve a pack of cigarettes and allegedly attached his father again before fleeing.

The Cullman County Circuit Clerk's office processed 56 plea deals throughout the week, 26 of which were related to drug offenses, that were accepted by District Attorney Wilson Blaylock.
