CULLMAN —
After opening Oktoberfest 2012 with a German-style chill this weekend, clear skies and higher temperatures are expected for the remainder of the week.
Officials say the cheery forecast is welcome news, as the dreary weather made for a good-but-not-great turnout for opening festivities Saturday and Sunday.
Hundreds turned out Saturday for the first day of events, and Festhalle Market Platz in downtown was packed Sunday for the official opening ceremonies.
Highs in the 70s are expected for the remainder of the week, with the National Weather Service forecasting clear skies well into the weekend.
The cold front is expected to pass tonight, giving way to temperatures in the low-70s today and tomorrow, which will warm into the low 80s by Friday and Saturday.
“We won’t see a dramatic warm-up, but it should be a pretty consistent warm-up,” NWS forecaster Chris Darden said. “It’s going to be a pretty nice week and we should start out [today] about 10 degrees higher than the day before. We’ll have a lot more sun with highs starting out in the upper-60s.”
A cold front passed through north Alabama Saturday causing cooler-than-expected temperatures, though Darden said that system has since moved south.
“In addition to that, the cloud cover has kept it fairly cool, but that looks to dissipate [Monday] night,” he said. “It should make for a dry, sunny week.”
