CULLMAN —
Gov. Robert Bentley has appointed two new Colony council members, clearing the way for the local government to reorganize and reopen services to the public.
State Sen. Paul Bussman, R-Cullman, said he received official confirmation from the governor’s office this morning that Parish Fitts and Crystal Wilson were appointed to the vacant seats.
“We had five people recommended, but two who had at first expressed interest said they no longer wanted to be considered,” Bussman said. “We tried very hard to get people on both sides of the issue to serve.”
The runoff for mayor ended in a tie between Patrick Ward and Donnis Leeth. The council’s efforts to break the deadlock also ended in ties and time finally ran out on the old council, which left city hall shut down since early this week.
Bussman said he has been told by remaining council members that a town council meeting is scheduled at 6 p.m. Monday.
“The first order of business is for the council to elect a mayor pro-tem or council president so that they can appoint the two clerk and any other positions that need to be resolved,” Bussman said. “Then they can look at appointing the mayor. It’s my understanding that they do not have to choose from the two who were tied in the runoff. They can look at someone else or even someone already on the council.”
