— The Cullman City School board has approved some emergency repairs to the roof of a main building at Cullman High School, which was damaged in a storm earlier this month.

An Aug. 3 thunderstorm lifted a portion of the roof of the A building off its frame, causing damage school officials want fixed as quickly as possible.

“This work needs to begin immediately for the safety of the students and for the sake of day-to-day operations,” Superintendent Dr. Jan Harris said.

The school board approved an approximately $42,000 emergency bid with Miller Roofing to replace the damaged portion of the roof at a meeting earlier this week. All the repair costs will be covered by insurance, Harris said.

Anita Overturf, facilities coordinator for the school system, said the project will only repair the damaged area. It does not included a complete re-roofing of the A building.

“This quote is to put the roof back as it was, a flat roof, in case we do want to do anything to it for future building projects,” she said. “So, this is having to do with about half the roof, from an expansion joint westward.”

Overturf said work is slated to begin Monday and will last at least a week, depending on weather conditions.

Cullman High School Principal Sheila Phillips said accommodations are already being made to relocate students while work is being done above the four affected classrooms.

“We’ll have some room in the library and we’re looking at some things to take care of that,” she said. “For example, if a teacher has coaching duties and will be out of the classroom, their rooms will likely be used for other classes.”

In addition to the roof damage, lightning from the Aug. 3 storm also hit the air conditioner unit on the new practice gym at the high school.

“They are working to get that back up right now,” Harris said. “They were waiting on a part that had to be ordered, but it should be fixed any day now.”

Over at the East Elementary School campus, a mid-day storm earlier this week caused some minor problems — knocking out the PA system, fire alarm and some campus technology.

“Our technology department has most of that up and running and we’re working with the fire department on the alarm,” Harris said. “We’ve just had an unlucky run with storms the past few weeks.”
