Vinemont takes another step forward with ballfields

VINEMONT — When Melba Patton ran for her first term as mayor of South Vinemont 16 years ago, the issue of sewage and ballfields were the two main platforms she ran on.

But after getting into office, sewage became the top priority as she learned of severe problems with the system. She and town officials quickly worked to develop a new wastewater treatment facility for the town, putting the issue of ballfields on the back burner for the time being.

In 2004, the sewer system was completed and the push to give residents in her town a recreational facility of their own kicked back up. Now, campaigning for her fifth term, she's seeing that project finally come to fruition as well.

Earlier last week, Patton received an artist's rendering from architectural company Goodwin, Mills and Caywood of the proposed new concession stand.

"I'm looking forward to it," Patton said. "The town and community have been so supportive throughout it all, so I know they're looking forward to it, too."

The new concession stand, which is part of a new sports complex proposed to have five softball/baseball fields, will be two-and-a-half stories and include office space, an assembly area, an umpire changing room, and a score keeping area. It will feature split-face block, cement board siding, and a metal roof.

"We've never had anything like this, so this is something we're in desperate need of," Patton said.

As far as the fields go, Patton added that the new additions will help reduce the number of late games played.

"With the two fields we have now, some of the small kids are having to play the late games," she said. "With the new additions, they'll be able to play earlier and get home at a reasonable hour to get in bed for school the next morning and the whole nine yards."
