An alleged domestic dispute ended with an Eva man being shot and killed by his neighbor.
Carlton Jan Raney, 46, died from a single gunshot wound to the chest in the front yard at his neighbor’s house on Cullman 1437 at around 7 p.m Monday night.
Officials with the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office are withholding the identity of the shooter at this time.
Chief Deputy Max Bartlett said no charges have been filed against the shooter, but noted that the investigation is still ongoing.
“We need to take a closer look at the evidence and then sit down with the district attorney (Wilson Blaylock) to decide how we’re going to move forward,” Bartlett said. “We’ll sit down with the district attorney sometime this week and make a decision on how to handle this.”
Raney’s body has been sent to Huntsville for a forensic autopsy.
According to Bartlett, a deputy responded to a trespassing call at the residence earlier in the day.
Sheriff’s deputies have been called to Raney’s residence on multiple occasions. He was arrested for reckless endangerment on July 18.
“There had been some type of domestic dispute,” Cullman County Sheriff Mike Rainey said. “The two of them had been in an argument and it apparently escalated. It’s just a bad situation all the way around.
“The worst part is that (Raney) had a young daughter. My thoughts and prayers go out to her because I know this is a difficult thing to deal with.”
