Blaze destroys equipment at Hanceville business

HANCEVILLE — Multiple vehicles and a storage building were destroyed after an acetylene (oxygen/acetylene) welding torch started a fire at Kretzschmar Motors Inc. in Hanceville Friday just after 11 a.m.

Hanceville Fire Chief Alan Bolling said there weren’t any injuries related to the blaze, but the business sustained a large amount of damage. Kretzschmar Motors Inc. is located on Alabama Highway 91 in Hanceville.

“Workers were cutting material with an acetylene torch and it caught on fire and quickly spread after it hit a diesel fuel tank,” Bolling said. “There were 8-10 vehicles on fire and it caught a storage building on fire.”

Bolling said it took 45 minutes to get the fire contained and they would be working an additional two hours to completely put the fire out.

“The salvage yard sells parts from the vehicles and machines they have and pieces for scrap so there are many vehicles here and there is so much flammable  material here so it was hard to get it under control,” Bolling said. “They lost a good bit of money because of this fire.”

Both the Hanceville Fire Department and the Hanceville Police Department responded to the call at 11:16 a.m. on Friday.
