Heavy rains, potential severe weather expected today

CULLMAN — The National Weather Service is reporting that showers and thunderstorms will continue to move northward across Alabama today, raising the possibility of severe storms in the afternoon.

A few of the storms during the afternoon and evening pose the highest risk of severe weather, especially in areas near and east of Interstate 65. Strong to damaging winds gusts could accompany the storms. A brief tornado cannot be ruled out, according the weather service.

Locally heavy rainfall is also expected throughout the afternoon and evening, bring a half-inch to an inch, and possibly as much as three inches.

Motorists are warned that ponding could occur on area and a few instances of flash flooding may be caused by the heaviest showers, the weather service reports.
