A Cullman mother found severely beaten inside her home July 15 has been released from UAB and is recovering at home.
The woman’s attacker has not been arrested, but police said they continue to investigate the violent incident that occurred inside the Briarwood Drive home in Carroll Acres subdivision. Sarah Leathers, 32, suffered severe head injuries and was airlifted to UAB Hospital where she treated in the intensive care unit and later released.
“She is home, but her memory is not clear about the event,” said Cullman City Assistant Police Chief Craig Green. “She has not be able to provide anything new information, and (Investigator) Craig Montgomery was the last person to speak with her.”
Police said Leathers’ former husband found her on a bed in the home she shares with her parents, who had left earlier that week on a vacation. Leathers was semi-conscious and was found with bruises, lacerations and bleeding from her ears. Police later found blood in the dining room and believe whatever happened to Leathers may have started in that area of the home.
The couple’s 4-year-old son was found in the basement unharmed, and nothing appeared to be stolen from the house. The former husband called police and medical personnel to the home, Green said. He frequently goes to the home to pick up the child, police said.
Police have interviewed Leather’s former husband, who Green said was cooperative. He later visited Leathers at the hospital with other family members.
Investigators skilled in interviewing children met with the woman’s son, but the interview has not yielded new evidence, police said. Authorities have also collected a computer and cell phone that belong to Leathers, but there are no reports of evidence that would provide clues to how she was injured. Police officers have also been door-to-door in the neighborhood asking residents for information.
