The system’s long range technology plan will be a major topic of discussion this week, as the Cullman County Board of Education community meetings kick off for the current semester.
The Hanceville and Vinemont meetings were held Monday, with the remaining local campuses set for this week and next. The meetings are hosted by Superintendent Billy Coleman.
Coleman started the community meetings after being elected superintendent three years ago, and said he believes they’ve been a great way to encourage community involvement.
“I think the biggest part of the community meetings is the fact that we put a high priority on communication,” he said. “We’re really just giving everyone an opportunity to come to a local meeting where the latest news about our system will be address and people can ask questions.”
From the system’s ongoing technology upgrades, to exactly how the system is spending new revenue created by a countywide half-cent sales tax, Coleman said many topics will be on the table this week. Some new programs will also be discussed, along with the pending transition to an appointed superintendent next year.
“We’re going to be talking about our technology plan and how far we’ve come since the half-cent sales tax passed, and where we’re going” he said. “We’ll also talk about engineering, the upcoming appointed superintendent, and our partnership with Mental Health of Cullman County for counseling. There are just some great things going on in Cullman County schools system.”
Coleman also plans to further explain some changes at the state and federal levels that will adjust the way student achievement is measured.
“I’ll be talking about the college and career readiness initiative, and what it means for how students are graded,” he said. “It’s a drastic difference to the standards, based on application of knowledge and being able to apply what you know. I think it’s a step in the right direction, but it’ll also be a change.”
