— Cullman’s restaurant options are about to get a little wider, when the popular barbecue franchise Jim ‘N Nicks opens later this year in south Cullman.

The southeastern chain has proven a popular stop in cities like Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, and now the owner of a Jasper franchise is expanding into Cullman.

The Cullman restaurant will be located on Cherokee Avenue SW, near the new ALDI grocery store on the back side of Heritage Park. Construction is already well under way, and company officials say they’re excited to come to Cullman.

“We’re so proud to be coming to town, and to become a part of the community,” local marketing representative Beth Kibler said.

Officials hope to announce a grand opening date soon. The business’ alcohol license was approved several weeks ago by the City of Cullman.

Jim ‘N Nicks was founded in 1985 with one location in Birmingham, and the franchise now totals more than 30 separate locations in seven states.

Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce President Leah Bolin said the addition of Jim ‘N Nicks is a major accomplishment for the local business climate — and could go another step toward showing Cullman can support more, popular restaurant franchises.

“It is a big ‘get’ for something as large as Jim ‘N Nicks franchise to come to Cullman,” she said. “As Cullman is looking to attract more chains, when you see the successes of those we do get, that’ll end up breeding more success in the future. I really believe that’s true.”

In her dealings with Jim ‘N Nicks up to this point, Bolin said she believes the company will be a great retail citizen for the area.

“Even though it is a franchise business, they very much seem to be a hometown business,” she said. “They’re sourcing local foods on their menu, and seem excited to become involved with community projects and sponsorships of local events. Even though they’re one of the big guys, they still really want to be a part of the Cullman community.”
