CULLMAN —
Heavy black smoke could be seen billowing throughout the city for a roughly an hour Wednesday afternoon as firefighters battled a blaze at Willingham Salvage off of Highway 278 West.
Because the property is not a part of the city limits, Bethsadia Volunteer Fire Department responded to the initial call before asking for mutual aid from Cullman Fire Rescue. Cullman EMS and the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
“It was a pile of scrap metal bales at the back of the property that caught fire,” Sgt. Jeff Warnke, day shift supervisor with the Cullman Police Department, said. “At this time, we don’t know what started it.”
Warnke said no employees were injured in the fire, and no equipment was damaged.
A rehab station was set up by Cullman EMS to keep firefighters hydrated.
“We had no major issues,” Cullman EMS Director Jerry Sellers said. “That’s just something that we’re required by state law to do.
At the deadline of this article, firefighters with Bethsadia were still on the scene checking for hot spots.
