CULLMAN — The Joppa Hulaco Ryan Water Authority has announced plans to raise water rates by 21.6 percent, beginning in February, 2010.
The 2,000 gallon base rate of $18.54 will jump to approximately $22.
Brett Barnard, water system manager, said the increase is necessary because it is has been passed on by the system’s water supplier.
“This increase was passed on to us,” Barnard said. “We hate to pass it on to our users, but we have to.”
The Joppa Hulaco Ryan Water Authority purchases water from Arab Water Works.
Barnard said Arab Water Works needed funds for some improvements to its water system, which led to a 21.6 percent increase for all customers — including the Joppa Hulaco Ryan Water Authority.
“They had some projects that they had to do,” Barnard said. “Mainly it was upgrades to improve the system.”
The board of directors at the Joppa Hulaco Ryan Water Authority expressed their appreciation to Arab Water Works for making the improvements.
“We appreciate Arab for their efforts in upgrading the water so we will have a better and safer drinking supply,” Barnard said. “We pride ourselves on having some of the best water in the state of Alabama. We’re still on really good terms with them, but ultimately, they’ve gone up so we have to go up.”
Barnard said the board of directors elected to delay the increase until February 2010 to give all customers an ample warning before it takes effect.
