Man arrested for Oct. attempted robbery of Kampis Grocery

CULLMAN — A man who cut a woman and attempted to rob a Vinemont grocery store in October has been arrested.

Good Hope resident Jose A. Carbajal, 20, has been charged with attempted robbery in the first degree, in connection to the Oct. 7 attempted robbery of Kampis Grocery on Eva Road.

“We made the arrest today after investigators developed the probable cause to charge this individual,” Cullman County Sheriff Tyler Roden said Wednesday afternoon. “We had some good leads that investigators have been working on for some time now.”

Carbajal was brought in for questioning, Roden said. After being interviewed by investigators enough evidence was found to charge him.

“We were able to identify this possible suspect and began the process of contacting him,” Roden said. “Investigators had the suspect come to the sheriff’s office, and once everything was put together with the suspect, we were able to charge him.”

When the attempted robbery occurred on Oct. 7, Carbajal — brandishing a 6-inch knife and wearing a hoodie — allegedly entered and demanded store owner Patricia Nobinger empty the register.

Nobinger ran, and Carbajal chased her around the store and eventually cut her face. After that, he ran out of the store.

“I guess he got scared and just took off out the door,” Nobinger told The Times at the scene. “He never got any money.”

Nobinger received only minor injuries from the cut.

Roden said Nobinger’s assistance during the investigation was a major help.

“The investigators did a great job, and the victim in the case was very helpful, as well,” he said. “Those two things together solved this case.”

Carbajal is currently incarcerated at the Cullman County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond.

Attempted robbery in the first degree is a Class B felony, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
