DODGE CITY — With plans for a traffic light put on hold, Dodge City officials are now considering access roads to alleviate traffic at the intersection of Highway 69 and County Road 216.
The Alabama Department of Transportation rejected the town’s request to install a traffic light where the two roads meet earlier this year, noting the amount of traffic would have to be twice as heavy to warrant the need.
Mayor Tawana Canada said a representative from the Alabama Department of Transportation will be visiting the town on January 14 to discuss alternatives to a traffic light.
“Someone from ALDOT will be coming to talk to us about adding in some access roads,” she said. “The state has suggested this is an alternative.”
The town has requested the traffic light because numerous accidents and near-misses have occurred at the intersection in recent years.
“I don’t think there have been any fatalities there in the last ten years, but it’s still a very dangerous spot,” Canada previously stated.
Though town officials would still prefer a traffic light, Canada said she will consider any option that could make the intersection safer.
“We’re just going to hear what they have in mind,” she said. “We still feel we need to have a red light.”
The council has also:
* Announced the town’s new Web site (http://www.dodgecitytown.com) has gone live. The Web site will list local businesses, along with community news. The Web site was created by H.A. Technologies for $1,322.
* Announced deputy Brett Rodgers will be returning to the town as a patrolman, replacing deputy Ryan Hogeland who left to patrol another district in the town. Rodgers had previously left to pursue a career in forestry, but now has returned.
“I am very pleased he is back and he has done a great job,” Canada said. “One of my main concerns is getting drugs out of Dodge City and I think he can help us with that.”
* Annexed Diane Scott’s property into the town.
* Set a new business license penalty of $50 after 30 days and $100 after 60 days, if local businesses have not renewed or bought a business license. The previous fee was 5 percent of the cost, or approximately $2.50.
* Created a $30 penalty charge for worthless checks written to the town.
