BREMEN —
Riders from across the south will be converging on Stony Lonesome OHV Park today as they battle it out for Rally Raid championship points as part of round two of the UTV Rally Raid 2013 series.
“Its a lot of work getting ready for it, but we like having it here,” said Bryan Grimmett, who is with the OHV park. “It brings people from all over.”
According to Grimmett, the Raid is a four-hour endurance race involving side by sides, similar to a UTV, racing against the clock during two hours of daylight and two hours of darkness. Not only do the top finishers get a cash prize, but participants also are given point ratings in a system that is set up similar to NASCAR.
“It’s a unique event,” he said. “You can’t go anywhere and do this. The next closest place is three to four hours away in Tennessee.”
Today’s event will mark the second one held at the park. The first one of the series was held last month and drew roughly 200-300 people from seven different states, according to park manager Mary Paden. Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, West Virgina, Maine, Wisconsin, and California were all represented. Several locals participated as well.
Days after the first race, the Cullman County Commission signed an event hosting agreement with Quantum Racing Inc. for future Raid racing events at Stony Lonesome. Eight more are scheduled throughout the rest of the year.
“This is very beneficial for the park,” Paden told commissioners at the meeting. “I think it’s a good thing for Cullman as well.”
The gate fee to get in to the event is $5. It’s set to begin at 4 p.m.
