The Oktoberfest board and Supreme Beverages are joining with The Cullman Times to assist with the annual Cares & Shares Food Drive.
Throughout the Oktoberfest week, chances are being sold for $1 each to win a commemorative Samuel Adams Oktoberfest stein. The stein, measuring at three feet in height, is provided by Supreme Beverages of Birmingham, which is an official Oktoberfest sponsor.
Tickets can be purchased downtown in the retail district where Oktoberfest board members have set up an entry table to local events. There is no limit on how many tickets anyone may purchase.
“This is wonderful that the Oktoberfest board and Supreme Beverages can help with the food drive. We know the need is tremendous for many area families and we hope this will be a big boost for the food drive,” said Ernest Hauk of the Oktoberfest Board.
The Times’ Cares & Shares Food Drive has a goal of 125,000 pounds of food, which will be provided to Cullman Caring for Kids Food Bank. The food drive concludes Oct. 12.
Food and cash donations are being accepted at The Times’ office at 300 Fourth Avenue SE, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Food should be non-perishable items. Cash donations should be checks.
Cullman Caring for Kids director Javon Daniel said cash donations make a big difference in buying food, because every dollar purchases seven pounds of food.
In recent food drives, checks ranging from $20 to several thousands have been given to the annual event. Last year’s record collection of 108,000 pounds came from individuals, schools, community organizations and local businesses.
The local food bank provides assistance to more than 500 families per month.
“Besides providing the entertainment of the festival for the community, assisting with local needs is something the Oktoberfest board wants to be a part of for Cullman County,” Hauk said. “Providing for others is always an important part of our lives and we hope everyone will help out by buying a chance on the stein.”
The Times’ has added a traveling trophy that will be awarded to the area school that provides the largest food donation, based on pounds per students at the respective school. Prizes will also be given away at the conclusion of the food drive for those who have contributed to the effort.
