— Katie Wiggington and her 2-year-old had quite the experience Monday afternoon.

Wiggington, who is 23 weeks pregnant, and her son, were inside of their house trailer on County Road 783 in the Walter community when it was flipped from its foundation as severe storms with strong winds, lightning, and hail pushed through the area. She said her husband, who works at Cullman Regional Medical Center, called to tell her the winds were getting up in town and that she may want to go to her dad’s. But, just as she hung up, she said the storm hit.

"We didn't have a lot of time, so I just grabbed him and wedged ourselves between our couches," she said. "I was praying the whole time. We were just at the right place in the house."

Wiggington's father, who lives across the road, was able to get his daughter and her son out safely by busting out a bathroom window. He took both to the hospital for evaluation.

"We're real beat up," Wiggington said. "We've got some cuts and scrapes, but we're OK, and the baby is OK.”

Wiggington and her family are staying with her father until the insurance company can assess the damage.
