CULLMAN —
A new season of musical entertainment is just around the corner as the Cullman Community Concert Association launches its annual membership drive.
The week-long subscription drive begins Monday. Season rates include all five concerts scheduled for the year. The rate is $50 for adults, $30 for students, and $135 for a family.
“We just came out of our most successful season ever, and we really believe this year could be even bigger because of the quality of entertainment we’ve lined up for the area,” said Lavell Thrasher, a member of the concert series board of directors.
The first concert will feature Jim Curry’s tribute to the late singer/songwriter John Denver. Heralded as “Take Me Home,” Curry plays guitar, mandolin, flute, keybords and drums to bring to life the long list of memorable hits composed by Denver. The concert will be Tuesday, Sept. 20, at Wallace State Community College. Curry’s tribute has been performed numerous times in Las Vegas.
Thrasher said at least 50 percent of last season’s subscribers have already paid for the new season, and he expects many more to return during the drive.
“I believe we have the strongest lineup of talent ever for this season, including a comedy troupe which is something we haven’t offered in the past. This should be a great season for everyone who loves great music and entertainment. This season as an incredible diversity of talent. We believe a lot of age groups will enjoy the lineup.” Thrasher said.
Thrasher said many residents attended concerts for the first time in the last season, and many of those are returning for this year’s offering.
“Most are surprised that we are bringing national-level entertainment to the area. It’s a very high level of entertainment. Our audience has typically been more adult, but some young people are starting to attend. We certainly invite younger people to attend a concert. It makes a nice, enjoyable evening,” Thrasher said.
Other concerts for the season include:
‰ American Spirit, featuring musical moments and memories that define American spirit.
‰ American Tenors, which have delighted audiences across the United States and Europe with their captivating show of vibrant combination of splendid voices, spot-on humor and impeccable selections, From "Nessun Dorma" to "West Side Story."
‰ Water Coolers, a cast of five New York City comics and singers.
‰ Carpe Diem String Quartet, a group that is becoming one of the most versatile ensembles of their generation. The group performs the classical string quartet repertoire, but their musical passion has led them down the paths of Gypsy, tango, folk, pop, rock, and jazz-inspired music. Their latest disc was nominated in four Grammy Awards Entries in 2009.
