Rotary auction today at civic center

Rotary Club of Cullman’s 41st annual auction gets under way today at 5 p.m. at the civic center.

The doors open at 5 to allow viewing of items available. The silent auction begins at 5:30, followed by the main auction at 6:45 p.m.

Visitors will be able to find a variety of items, ranging from household goods to collectibles. Proceeds from the event are used by Rotary to support local community projects.

“The auction averages raising around $40,000. All the money is spent locally to support community programs. One thing we have focused on recently is replacing all of the trees on city property that were destroyed by the 2011 tornado,” said Billy Jackson, president of Rotary. “While we do this to help with community projects, the auction is a lot of fun for everyone and people find great bargains throughout the night.”

Other community services supported by Rotary in recent years include Childhaven, Cullman Caring for Kids, Cullman Fire and Rescue, Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership, Wallace College Foundation, and many other projects and programs that benefit local residents.

“I moved here in 1995 and one of the reason I’m still here is the Rotary Club and what it does for the community. The members enjoy reaching out and helping in the community,” said Rotary member Francene Van Sambeek.
