Cullman officials will learn tonight if the county has been chosen to host the new Bass Hall of Fame, as the board is scheduled to announce the site selection at a banquet in Tulsa, Okla.
Cullman is a finalist to host the hall of fame, along with the nearby City of Guntersville. The Cullman pitch focuses on a proposed joint use facility at the city-owned Burrow Property on County Road 222.
A small contingent of local officials will be heading to Oklahoma for the event, while the rest of the city council and other leaders will watch a live stream of the announcement. The decision is expected to be revealed at approximately 8 p.m.
Mayor Max Townson will be among a small local delegation making the trip, and said he hopes the announcement will go in the county’s favor. One big help is recent confirmation that the state will build a new Interstate 65 interchange on County Road 222, approximately one mile from the proposed site.
“It’s kind of like sitting on pins and needles — we can hardly wait,” Townson said. “Naturally we hope it all turns out well for us. We feel confident because of the interchange that will occur at County Road 222. We really hope they decide on Cullman.”
Cullman’s proposal features a hall of fame building with an aquarium and a fishing camp which would include involvement by Auburn University. A new civic center would also be attached to the facility, all housed at the former Burrow property on County Road 222. If Cullman is selected, the city plans to share the cost of construction with the Hall of Fame board. The city would then lease the facilities back to the board and retain ownership.
