Field of Dreams hosts Fun Fest for CCCDD

For 18-year-old Stormi Brock, the tug-of-war game was what she most looked forward to playing at the Fun Fest event on Friday morning.

“I’ve made friends here,” Brock said. “It’s hot on the fields, but it’s fun.”

Once known as the Day of Champions, Fun Fest connects multiple groups across Cullman County to join together for a free event involving the Cullman County Center for the Developmentally Disabled (CCCDD) for a day of games, food, and fun in the sun for all ages.

Tiffany Wilson, assistant program coordinator of the summer program, headed up the event and said 150 people were in attendance including adults from the CCCDD, Cullman Therapeutic Program, and the Golden Opportunity summer program with participants ranging in age from 7-60 years.

“We have been doing tons of games like don’t drop the ball, shot-put, 50-yard dash, tug-of-war, kickball, and face-painting,” Wilson said. “We also have tons of games set up for them to play if they didn’t want to participate in the others like a dunking booth, obstacle course, and a water slide.”

Wilson said they hosted many volunteers from Holly Pond. Heart of Dixie assisted in the shirts that were provided and Walmart Distribution Center fixed the lunch for the participants.

Top Quality Industries Supervisor Mitt Robbins said they have a contract with Walmart distribution and partnered with the event.

“I would encourage others to be involved with the event,” Robbins said. “We have a lot of fun out here. We work hard and we play hard.”

Wilson said she would encourage others into the community to get involved with future events or simply come and watch.

“The city park and rec. let us have it at the Field of Dreams and they provided helpers,” Wilson said. “Parents have came and joined. It’s just been a fun day for everyone. We want the  community to take part in it or come and watch because they love people watching them participate and making a big deal of it; They love it like anyone else would. So we really encourage the community to get involved with it.”
