VINEMONT —
With major leaking problems at the Child Development Center, the Cullman County Board of Education has declared an emergency situation to rush immediate repairs at the facility.
The Cullman County Board of Education had bid out the project, which included some additional electrical and engineering needs, though the bid amounts returned were much higher than anticipated.
So, officials have declared the work an “emergency” to re-bid it immediately without the additions so work can begin with no waiting period.
“We needed some mechanical and electrical work done, too, but the bids came back way too high and exceeded what we could afford,” Superintendent Billy Coleman said. “Now, we’re going to change it up and try to do some things in phases, with the first phase being the roof repair.”
Considering the state of disrepair at the facility, Coleman said he believes it could cause additional damage to wait the 30-day grace period to fully re-bid the project.
“We can’t afford to go through another 30-day bid process, because we need to get this done as soon as possible,” he said.
The Child Development Center is one of many Cullman County buildings with roof issues, and Coleman said he hopes to slowly start repairs and replacements system-wide over the next several years using new revenue generated by the recently approved countywide half-cent sales tax.
“We’re not going to change our way of thinking, and we’re still going to be good stewards,” Coleman said.
