CULLMAN — Plans for a complete overhaul to historic Clarkson Covered Bridge are surfacing once again.

Cullman County Commissioners passed a resolution Thursday to extend the Alabama Department of Transportation's enhancement project for the restoration.

"This is an extension for the planning and the development on the old bridge," county engineer Jon Brunner said. "It's been an ongoing project since 2001."

When asked by commissioner Stanley Yarbrough what the hold up has been, Brunner replied, "It has to get approved by the Bridge Bureau before anything else goes, and that's been the hang up."

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Clarkson Covered Bridge was constructed in 1904. At 270 feet in length, it's the only remaining covered bridge in Cullman County.
