CULLMAN — A two-vehicle accident on U.S. 278 East near St. Bernard left two people injured Friday afternoon.

Traffic came to a stop along the highway for about 30-40 minutes as both drivers were airlifted to hospitals in Birmingham, said a patrol officer at the scene. The accident occurred about 1:12 p.m.

Traffic was already slowing in the area because of a box truck that had stalled. County sheriff’s deputies and city police were at the scene to assist with traffic when the accident occurred involving the two vehicles.

Injured were Frances Waldrop, 74, Cullman, who was driving a Buick, and Jason Manasco, 39, Cullman, the driver of a Toyota pickup truck. The officer said Manasco was sitting in his vehicle when it was struck from behind.

Manasco suffered head trauma and was in and out of consciousness when officers and medical crews reached his vehicle. His dog was also in the vehicle, but was unharmed, the officer reported.

The accident remains under investigation. No other details were available concerning the condition of the injured drivers.
