East and West Elementary schools are both in the running for the prestigious Exemplary Reading Award in the State of Alabama.
Awarded by the International Reading Association, the prize recognizes outstanding reading and language arts programs at all grade levels.
Both Cullman City elementary schools are finalists, and the organization is expected to announce a winner in the coming months.
This is the second year in a row that Cullman City Schools have been in the running for the prize, with Cullman Primary School winning last year. A team from IRA visited both East and West last week to gather more information about reading initiatives.
“To be a finalist two years in a row is a great honor for our teachers,” Harris said. “To receive the award last year and be a finalist for the state award this year. It validates their efforts.”
