Road conditions across Cullman County are deteriorating as snow continues fall over the area.
The Cullman County Emergency Management Agency is reporting that roads going over Battleground Mountain, Waco Mountain, and U.S. 31 North from Hurricane Creek are iced over and dangerous for motorists.
“We have worsening conditions all over the county. School buses are being sent back to the schools because the roads have become too dangerous,” said Phyllis Little, director of Cullman County EMA.
County schools superintendent Billy Coleman said a heavy snowfall before the planned 1 p.m. closing times of schools forced the buses to cancel their routes for now. Students are still lodged at West Point, Harmony and Cold Springs schools.
“We have parents picking up some of the students at this time. We have held the buses for now and we hope the conditions will improve,” Coleman said.
Little said concern is growing that some people may not be able to make it to their homes because of road conditions.
“We’re looking at the situation and we may have to consider what the next step will be,” Little said.
If public shelters are opened, EMA officials will issue a statement before nightfall.
