Large power outage affects half of city

A power outage left most of south Cullman dark for a few hours Wednesday night, following an equipment failure at the south Cullman substation.

Cullman Power Board customers located in the southern area of the service area experienced an outage that started at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday evening.

The failure knocked approximately 1,450 customers off-line, though power was restored to all but approximately 150 customers by 9:15 p.m. The remaining customers were restored by 10:15 p.m.

Power board crews made the necessary repairs and say they do not anticipate any more issues.

The outage also cut power to Heritage Park briefly, where crews have been working for several days to set up the stage and layout for this weekend’s Rock the South music festival. Cullman Power Board Manager Mike Manning said the outage was not related to the event preparations.
