Library, United Way team up for Born to Read event

CULLMAN — Cullman County Public Library and United Way teamed up for a Born to Read day of action held at the library on Thursday morning from 9-11 a.m.

Library staff members were present to read with the children, as well as other volunteers. United Way Marketing Communications Director Amber Black said she was excited for the support at their Six Annual United Way Day of Action.

“We had a good turnout, we saw between 50-60 kids,” Black said.

“We had 80 gift certificates to give out, and I had about 20 left. It was a great morning, the readers were excellent and I was pleased with the results.”

A Day of Action project is a day that is recognized nationwide by all the area United Way’s to do something for the community through volunteer work. Black said in year’s past they’ve completed different types of projects.

“One year we did a ‘Stuff the bus’ project and gathered school supplies for the area schools,” Black said. “This was our third year for Born to Read as our Day of Action.”

The free event provided all children in attendance with $10 gift cards from Deb’s bookstore. All Children 12 and under were invited to attend.

Black said she appreciated McGriff Tire Company as they were the event’s exclusive sponsor.
