Shelters near completion

By Tiffany Green

Garden City’s storm shelters are almost complete with just a few finishing touches needed.

“They are working on the electrical work and working to get the bathrooms finished and the wall up in the inside,” Pam Leslie, town clerk said. “We are making progress daily.”

The town received a grant for $513,128 with 25 percent matching from the town.

Town officials awarded the storm shelter bid to Safe-T-Shelter, Aqua Marine Enterprises, Inc., of Danville for $415,210 in March.

The shelter consists of five buildings, each holding up to 96 people. The middle room will have bathrooms and a first aid station. The shelters provide a safe place during tornadoes, high winds, flying debris and ground strike lightning. They will withstand up to 250 mile and hour winds.

The shelters are set and anchored to a reinforced, monolithic concrete pad foundation. They feature three heavy duty locks on the inside of the doors and a separate keyed lock on the outside for security purposes. The powered ventilation provides 15 cubic feet of fresh air per person per minute, per FEMA requirements.

In other business at a recent meeting, the council:

‰ Donated $418.50 to Cullman County Emergency Management Agency. EMA determines the donation by estimating 70 cents per person according to the town’s population.

‰ Donated $100 to the Cullman County Christmas Parade which is held each December in Hanceville.

‰ Donated $200 each to Hanceville Elementary, Middle and High Schools.

‰ Announced the town will host Trunk-or-Treat at the walking trails on Oct. 31.

‰ Resident Bertis Bevis, a boy scout from Troop 450, donated four picnic tables to River Park to earn his Eagle Scout award.
