Grant will allow upgrade at Sportsman Lake Park

CULLMAN — Part of Sportsman Lake Park will soon undergo another round of renovations.

With a $15,000 grant from the Cullman County Community Development Commission (CCCDC) last week, Cullman County Park and Recreation Park Manager Delitha Marchman said work on reconstructing the middle restroom near the pavilions could begin as early as the end of the month. Once finished, she said the newly remodeled restroom will be handicap accessible.

"As soon as we get the money, we'll be starting," Marchman said.

Last week's grant marked one of several the county's Park and Rec department has received from the relatively new formed organization. Past grant money has allowed for renovations of the other two restrooms at the park, as well as the addition of a bath house. Marchman said the upgrades and new addition have increased the number of visitors.

"The number of campers we see, as well as the number of park visitors we get has went up greatly because of it," she said. "This is all for the community and helping keep people here in Cullman."

Without the help of the CCCDC, Marchman added none of the work would have been possible.

"That is the best thing that was ever come up with," Marchman said. "It's the best thing for people like us who are non-profit. They've been super to us, and I can't thank them enough for their efforts."

In addition to Cullman County Park and Rec, four other organizations also received grant money during the CCCDC's monthly meeting.

Red Cross was awarded $6,287.80 to go toward disaster relief funds that will stay in Cullman County. Mike Bates, the executive director for the Cullman-Winston-Blount county Red Cross territory said money from the disaster relief funds goes toward helping families when there is a fire, flood, or any other type of disaster.

In the three county area he works, Bates said their chapter averages over 100 fires a year, and can disperse anywhere from $500 to $1,500 depending on that families needs.

"All of our money is strictly donated," Bates said. "So we're very fortunate and very thankful to the CCCDC for helping us out."

The town of Dodge City was given $15,000 in grant funds to help with the town's sidewalk project. Meanwhile, West Point High School's baseball team received $6,000 to repair lights at the baseball field. Cold Springs Quarterback Club received $3,800 to purchase new helmets for the football team.

The next CCCDC meeting will bee held at 6 p.m. Oct. 23 at West Point Town Hall.
