A taste of home
By Trent MooreMark and Cindy Gregory, of Baileyton, learned a few new recipes to try out in the kitchen.
“We both cook,” Mark said, during a short intermission Saturday at the fourth annual Taste of Home Cooking School at Wallace State Community College.
“I really loved the how-to demonstrations,” Cindy added. “This is only our first year coming, but we will definitely come back. I loved it.”
A record crowd of more than 650 people joined Cindy and Mark at the event, which was hosted by chef Michelle Roberts. Roberts showcased various recipes and cooked numerous dishes on-stage for the event.
Dozens of door prizes, such as recipe books and gift bags, were awarded throughout the day. Roberts encouraged attendants to yell “I love food” when they won a prize.
Barbara Poe won the school’s grand prize, a $1,000 handcrafted table with four chairs made by Greg McCluskey, owner of The Candle Garden.
The show was sponsored by The Cullman Times, and publisher Bill Morgan emceed the event.
Debbie Miller, classified manager at The Times, said the event was a huge success.
“The turnout was exceptional and the event went great,” she said. “We are so proud to bring this to Cullman and hope to continue doing it next year.”
Cullman resident Ludmilla Stevenson said she wishes the Cullman area would play host to more events like the cooking school.
“I think it was awesome and just a great presentation,” she said. “It’s really classy and educational. This is the type of thing we need more of in Cullman.”
Becky Burney, also of Cullman, said the event gave her a few more ideas she may try soon.
“I really like to try new recipes, so I’ll definitely be trying some of these at home,” she said. “It’s really interesting. I liked it.”
Michelle Wayman, of Logan, said she has attended every Taste of Home Cooking School for the past four years.
“I never miss one,” she said. “I just love watching her cook.”
Roberts said her favorite thing about hosting the event is getting to meet members of the audience.
“This is what I love about these events,” she said, while posing for pictures with attendees. “I just love getting to interact with the fans.”
