Local woman receives minor injury in robbery attempt
By Patrick McCrelessWhen Kampis Grocery owner Patricia Nobinger saw a hooded man brandishing a 6-inch knife enter her business, she did what any sensible person in her position would do.
She ran.
“All he said was ‘give me the money,’ but he didn’t give me time,” Nobinger said. “I ran and he chased me around the store ... we circled around and then he grabbed me from the back on my arm and cut me on my face.”
Nobinger said the robbery attempt lasted barely 10 seconds.
“I guess he got scared and just took off out the door,” she said. “He never got any money.”
Cullman County Sheriff Tyler Roden said the attempted robbery occurred at approximately 1 p.m. at the business, which is located on Eva Road in Vinemont.
“The suspect has not been caught,” Roden said. “Deputies responded to the scene and we did an immediate search of the area and we got air support from the Cullman Police Department. We’ve got a few leads and hopefully we’ll be able to catch this individual.”
The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 5 feet, 9 inches tall and about 140 pounds. He is possibly driving a white, older model Camaro or Firebird-type vehicle.
“We had some individuals who drove by the store at the time who saw that vehicle parked behind the store,” Roden said.
Despite having a cut on her right cheek and being chased around her business, Nobinger said she felt just fine.
“I’m okay, but I’m about to go down to Urgent Care to get a tetanus shot,” Nobinger said Wednesday afternoon. “There’s no telling where that knife has been.”
Nobinger noted that in all her 25 years as owner of Kampis Grocery, nobody has ever tried to rob her.
“We’ve had burglaries, but nothing face to face,” she said.
