WEST POINT —
A new face will be representing Place 2 on the West Point town council when newly elected officials are sworn in on November 5.
Darion Daniel defeated Brad Smith for the seat during the municipal runoff elections Tuesday night. Daniel had 54 percent of the vote to Smith’s 24 percent.
“The town was in a situation where it couldn’t lose with either of them,” said West Point Mayor Kenneth Kilgo, who was re-elected in August. But I congratulate Darion on his win.”
Daniel will take over for Chad Smith, who did not seek re-election. With municipal elections now over, Kilgo made note that the council will have four new members when the new terms begin next month. Frankie Jones will represent place one, which is currently held by Steve Link. Incumbent Gerald Schaefer will remain in the council Place 3 seat, while Alton Bailey will take over for Jerry D. Smith in Place 4. Michael Barnett will be the council Place 5 representative.
“It’s going to be a learning process, but I think it’s going to be a good group,” Kilgo said. “I know everyone’s heart is in the right place, and that’s all that matters. I’m excited for everybody.”
Smith was appreciative of everyone who showed their support for him through his campaign.
“I appreciate everyone who came out and voted for me,” he said.
Daniel could not be reached for comment by deadline Tuesday night.
