CULLMAN —
Garden City will see a new mayor for the first time in 10 years after Tim Eskew defeated incumbent Harden Davis in Tuesday’s runoff election.
Eskew, who serves on the town council, claimed 90 votes to Davis’ 60. Meanwhile, incumbent town council member Pat Chafin won in a runoff over Teresa Martin Goodwin, 82-57.
Davis, 88, had served 10 years as mayor and eight years as a council member. He said he intends to remain involved in the community.
“This is where I was born and raised, so I’ll certainly remain interested in the welfare of the town,” Davis said. “We’ve left the town in good financial shape and there is still potential for some good things to happen here.”
Eskew, who has served eight years on the council, praised Davis for managing the town well during his tenure as mayor.
“Mayor Davis had a good administration and he ran a good campaign,” Eskew said. “I just decided it was time to step up to see what I could do. I think we need to try to get more business and draw more families to Garden City. It’s a great community and we’ve got to look closer at what we have to offer and see where we can go with it.”
Eskew said he was impressed by the turnout in the runoff, noting that more people voted Tuesday than in the August general election.
“We have great interest in the town among our citizens. We have good turnouts and participation in the council meetings and I think we can build from there,” Eskew said. “I know that the economy has been tough, but Garden City is in a location that has some advantages. With the good financial condition of the town and the care of the people, we hope we can start moving forward again. I just hope I can live up to the expectations of the people who voted.”
Eskew, 56, is a native of Garden City and works for the county school board of education.
Davis said he is appreciative of the time he served as mayor and as a council member.
“I feel good about the time I’ve had to serve the town. We’ve done quite a bit and I enjoyed working along the way. We don’t owe anyone money and we have good water now, which we paid for,” Davis said.
Eskew will take over the mayor’s post in early November.
