A Yellow Dot awareness and information luncheon was held at Northbrook Baptist church on Tuesday. The Yellow Dot program was created to assist citizens following automobile accidents when they might not be able to communicate for themselves.
Cullman County Sheriff Mike Rainey, whose office is a sponsor, said programs like these are key are for making citizens safer.
“I came across this program three years ago online,” said Rainey. “There are only nine counties who have it in Alabama and we’ve worked with Laura Weaver and the Northeast Alabama Traffic Safety Office in making it available here.”
The Yellow Dot program is the first of it’s kind in the state of Alabama working as a cooperative effort between sheriff’s deputies, local police officers, fire departments, State Troopers, emergency medical services, senior centers, etc.
Many already see the benefits they will have in being involved with the program.
“I have some medical problems and take medication,” said Jerry Smith. “If I were in an accident, no one would know how to treat me. This is a helpful program.”
The Yellow Dot program involves four items: a photo, a completed personal form, a yellow dot decal and a yellow dot folder. A photograph is taken of the participant and put inside the yellow folder, alongside the form that is filled out with the participant’s information.
“The yellow dot decal is placed on the back windshield on the lower left corner,” said Rainey. “The yellow folder with the information and picture is placed in the glove compartment. The information is readily available for first responders during the golden hour to help save lives.”
