WEST POINT —
It’s taken a few visits and a few phone calls to get the installation process complete, but the two warning lights at what West Point Mayor Kenneth Kilgo feels is a dangerous intersection are finally up.
Each warning light sits just a few hundred yards, east and west, of the town’s main traffic light at Alabama Highway 157 and County Road 1242.
“It took a little rattling ALDOT’s (Alabama Department of Transportation) cages to get them, but I think they catch people’s attention,” Kilg.o said.
Within the last two years, Kilgo and council members have worked with ALDOT to get a study done in hopes of lowering the speed limit on Alabama Highway 157 from 55 to 45. However, ALDOT didn’t see fit. But because of the concern Kilgo had for the school traffic in the morning and afternoon’s he wasn’t settling, thus the push for the warning lights.
“It’s ben a six year process, but we’re tickled to death we have them,” he said.
Since they’ve been installed, Kilgo noted he’s already seen and gotten phone calls about the impact the lights are making.
“It’s slowed the speed of the big trucks down, and that’s what we wanted,” Kilgo said. “I think it’s a real benefit to our town.”
