— The Arab, Ala. man who allegedly assaulted an 87-year-old Cullman woman who later died, met for a pre-trial court date on October 30.

Emmett Leroy Davis, 52, of Arab, was initially charged with first-degree assault, but is now facing a murder charge in the death of Cullman resident Helen June Mayo after she died of complications related to injuries she suffered in the attack. He met in Cullman County Circuit Court on Oct. 30 for a pre-trial court proceeding, but has not been indicted.

The attack happened in her home on Dec. 3, 2012, near Cullman High School where she lived alone. Mayo sustained severe facial injuries and was kept in UAB Hospital where she later died on Jan. 6.

Cullman Police Department investigators believe Mayo and other nearby residents were familiar with Davis, having previously hired him to do a variety of maintenance chores around their homes. They also believe the attack on Mayo wasn’t random, that the alleged suspect had targeted her home with an undisclosed motive.

The District Attorney’s office said the case is pending and in circuit court.
