Organizers with the Cullman Electric Cooperative are gearing up for their annual meeting Saturday.
However, there will be one notable change when it kicks off at 8 a.m. Unlike in the past, the event won’t be held at Cullman High School. Instead, the new venue is Northbrook Baptist Church.
“At the time, Cullman High School was scheduled to have begun construction,” Cullman co-op spokesperson Brian Lacy said. “We looked at several places in terms of a central location, and Northbrook was the best choice. They have been very accommodating to us. Hopefully everyone will come out.”
Musical entertainment will be provided from 9 to 11 a.m. by multi-award winning family group The Hoppers. Known as America’s Favorite Family of Gospel Music, they are favorites on the Gaither Homecoming tours and their recordings frequently land near the top of the Billboard sales and radio charts.
In addition to free hot dogs, popcorn and drinks, games, balloons, tattoos and spin-art for children, the event also allows Co-op customers a chance to participate in the operation of the county’s power board. Lacy said registration cards and ballots were mailed out to customers and businesses in August. But for those who missed the deadline to mail them back in and still want to participate in voting on new board members for districts one, three, and five, they can do so by registering between 8 and 11 a.m.
Neil Rainwater is running for re-election against Bob Chaney, Mike Duke, and Phillip Garrison for district one. In district three, Robert Tidwell, Jr is running for re-election against Larry Williams, while in district five, Dr. Lisa Weeks is seeking re-election against David Scott.
“Being we’re a co-op, every single person or business that receives electricity has a vote,” Lacy said. “We try to promote participation to make sure members have a say in who fellow members are representing.”
He added the job of the nine-person board is to hire the CEO and general manager, as well as set policy and make financial decision to strengthen the company.
Those who register and attend will receive a $5 credit on their power bill, a kitchen cutting board, and other gifts, as well as have their names entered to win the grand prize — a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado 4x4 pickup truck. Also, all members who voted, either by mail or in person at the meeting, will be eligible to win one of 20 $100 credits on their Cullman Electric Cooperative account.
After the elections of board members, Lacy said an annual report would also be given.
“This just gives us a chance to give a report of what’s taken place over the past 12 months, and highlight some of our accomplishments, some of the changes that have taken place, and some of the services we’re now offering.”
The event is scheduled to conclude around noon.
