Shots fired in Jones Chapel; authorities investigating

CULLMAN — Shots were fired near a residence and the Piggly Wiggly store in Jones Chapel this afternoon, but authorities report there were no injuries.

Cullman County Sheriff Mike Rainey said deputies and investigators were called to the Piggly Wiggly parking lot after the last shots were fired in the vicinity around 2:30 p.m.

"At this time we have no arrests. Our investigators have been questioning people," Rainey said.

The sheriff said some of the people involved were from Lamar County and that they may have been in the area checking on family matters.

The first shots that were reported fired were near a residence in Jones Chapel. Rainey said the shots were reportedly fired from a car, but no weapon was found later in a search. Investigators are also looking into a report that a person from the residence may have followed the car and fired shots near Piggly Wiggly.

"We really don't have anything else to report at this time, but our investigation will continue," Rainey said.
