CULLMAN — Good morning, readers, this is what's happening in your county today through Labor Day:

Weather:

Today: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 95. Heat index values as high as 99. Northwest wind around 5 mph.

Tonight: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 a.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 68. Calm wind.

Saturday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 93. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph.

Saturday night: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72.

Sunday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 91.

Sunday night: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 71.

Best bets for today and beyond:

Boston butt/rib sales: The Dodge City Lions Club will sell Boston butts and rib racks at 8 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30, and continuing through to Saturday, Aug. 31, at the lot near S&S Foods in Dodge City. The roasts will be $25; and the rack of ribs are $20. All proceeds will benefit club projects.

The Hanceville Lions Club will sell Boston butts for $30 at 7 a.m. Aug. 29-30 at Warehouse Discount Grocery, 708 Main St., Hanceville 35077. Also, barbecue sandwiches will be sold on those days from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds will benefit Lions Club’s community projects.

Ribeye steak sandwich sale: The Cullman County Cattlemen and Cattlewomen will sell grilled ribeye steak sandwiches from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 30; and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 31, at the Cullman Shopping Center. Cost is $5/sandwich with all proceeds benefiting the Cattlemen/Cattlewomen’s associations. Advance orders may be placed by 9 p.m. Aug. 29, to Ed Calvert at 256-734-9337.

Sweet Tater Festival: This festival will be Sept. 1-2, at a new location — Smith Lake Park! This site has more parking and more booths. Vendors who’d like to set up a booth may find a vendor registration form at www.sweeettaterfestival.com. Spaces are $35 each.

The festival will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday. Admission is $3/person, which includes free parking. Enjoy all-day entertainment, door prizes, arts/crafts, food vendors, children’s rides, and more. Musical entertainment to include Gospel, Country, Bluegrass and special appearances by Traci Hite - Patsy Cline tribute artist; and Wayne Abbott, Willie Nelson tribute artist. Also, the Tall Timber Medicine Show. This is a family-friendly event.

Sweet Tater lovers can sample sweet tater pies, fried pies, tater fries, baked sweet taters with butter and cinnamon, and sweet tater bread. Also, sweet potatoes will be sold in 10-lb. bags.

This year will be the first Street Rod car show - $10 participant fee. With the current cars enrolled for this year’s show, it promises to be a big one! Entries are from all over Alabama. Contact David Speegle for more information on the car show at 256-385-1401.
