CULLMAN —
A local gas station is asking customers to return kerosene purchased at the store, as it could be tainted.
The kerosene supply at the Clean Fuels gas station, also known as “The Peddler,” on Highway 278 east of Convent Road, was accidentally mixed with other chemicals earlier this week. Due to the mixture, the kerosene could become unstable.
“We’re trying to get it all returned, because it’s become a life safety issue,” Cullman Fire Marshal Chris Chaffin said.
Anyone who purchased kerosene at the station between noon on March 15, until approximately 4 p.m. on March 16, is encouraged to return it to the store immediately. Their purchase will be replaced upon return.
Approximately 22 customers bought the tainted kerosene before the problem was discovered, according to sales receipts.
“There’s some possibility of contamination and we just want to take care of it,” Jet Pep spokesperson Juritta Neal said. “There was a mixture and there is a possibility some of these transactions had contaminated products.”
The Clean Fuels station is owned and operated by the Holly Pond-based Jet Pep, Inc.
Chaffin said the store owners are working closely with his office to rectify the situation.
“They have plans in place to fix the problem and they’re doing what’s right on it,” he said. “What they’re doing is good with our department and they’re working hard to correct this.”
The mixing issue has since been rectified, Neal said.
“Everything has been taken care of,” she said. “Anything purchased from now on is not in question.”
