VINEMONT —
Longtime Vinemont resident J.D. Marcum has announced he is seeking another term on South Vinemont's town council.
Marcum is in his 11th year of serving the town. He served eight of those as vice mayor.
Since bring appointed his first year, Marcum has seen the town's sewer project completed, a storm shelter and storm siren installed, a traffic light installed at the V&W intersection, restrooms completed at the town's walking trail, and helped get 32.5 acres of land for the town's ball park complex. While quite a bit has been accomplished, he still feels there's room for more to be done.
"I'd like to see it grow some more," Marcum said. "I'd like for us to get a drug store and see several other small businesses come in. We haven't been able to purchase property for small industries and that's something else I would like to see us do."
Something else he said he would like to see done is four-laning the small portion of Highway 31 from the traffic light to roughly Hurricane Creek Park.
"The state already has the land, and that's something else I would like to see finished," he said. "We've talked to them, but they haven't made any promises."
Before taking office, Marcum previously worked in construction in Birmingham, as well as worked for the Department of Agriculture. He worked in real estate from 1972-2011 and served as president of the Board of Realtors and the State Appraisal Board in Montgomery. The last 30 years he has served as an elder at Ridgecrest Community Church, here he has also been an elder for the last 11 years.
