VINEMONT —
Melba Patton won a fifth term as mayor of South Vinemont, pledging to move ahead with the opening of the town’s new ballfields.
“I was given the privilege of serving the people of South Vinemont and I’m very thankful. I love our town and the people here,” Patton said.
Patton defeated challenger Robert Schweighart, a member of the town council, 74-40.
“I’ve been very fortunate through the years,” Patton said. “Even when we’ve had some changes on the council we have all been able to work well together for the town. I think the people have seen what has been done in the past years, and that we are still moving forward.”
Patton said, weather permitting, the completed phases of the town’s new ballpark will open between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The park will include lighted fields, a concession stand and other features for the public to enjoy.
The town has moved forward with the recreation project by obtaining grants and using local funds. Patton has updated the projects in recent years by noting that the town has not incurred debt in developing the ballfields.
“I think it has been important to keep our town in the black financially,” Patton said. “Looking forward we have some opportunities for additional businesses that will help our town and provide more for our people.”
Several council seats were also contested in South Vinemont.
The following winners were declared:
* Place 2, Sonya Mabry
* Place 3, Reggie Dodson
* Place 4, J.D. Marcum
*‰ Place 5, Shirley Arnett.
