BREMEN —
Pretty soon the entrance to the North Alabama Agriplex will have a new look.
Earlier this week the center received $5,000 in grant money from the Cullman Community Development Commission (CCCDC) to help buy supplies for a rain garden that will not only be used as an educational tool for citizens, but will help beautify the area as well.
"We will be putting in a special pipe system that will allow all of the water in the flat lot to drain into the garden," Agriplex board member Tom Williamson said. "It will be beautiful when it's all done. Hopefully a lot of people in the community will benefit from it."
The CCCDC also awarded Cullman Rescue Squad $13,000 to purchase training equipment. In addition, Victim Services was awarded $25,000 to help with the cost of updating the exterior of their building to improve safety related to security cameras.
"Right now we only have one that works," said Donna Jacobs, an employee with the agency. "So this will be added safety for our clients and staff."
Due to the tornadoes last April, the non-profit agency had to postpone it's annual fundraiser, and have since haven't had the funds to take on the project.
"Our community donations have been down, so we're really thankful the CCCDC awarded us this money," Jacobs said.
This year's fundraiser is scheduled to be held Tuesday at TP Country Club, where Bob Kurtz, Cullman's Golf Ironman, will be roasted prior to his IronMan competition scheduled for the following day. Jacobs said tickets may be purchased at the Victim Services office, TP, and Warren Wholesale.
The CCCDC had a total of $44,450.49 to be given out, however, a remaining balance of $1,450.49 was put back into the account to be awarded at the next meeting scheduled for Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. at the schoolhouse in Garden City.
