CULLMAN —
Property acquisition for the City of Cullman’s Duck River dam project continues to progress, and the utilities board has now purchased eight properties in the site footprint.
The city plans to build a 40-acre lake with a 32-million-gallon-per-day capacity in northeast Cullman County, and is in the early phases of acquiring the necessary property. The reservoir will be used in conjunction with the area’s current water source Lake Catoma.
Nearly 20 properties have been negotiated, and 34 parcels are in process. Appraisals are 88 percent complete, and review appraisals are 82 percent complete.
“By the end of September, we should be able to give you a good estimate on what to expect monetarily,” property acquisition coordinator Mandell Tillman said at a Tuesday utilities board meeting. “We closed two today and should have eight at the end of this week.”
The board spent some time in executive session following the meeting to discuss some specifics related to property acquisition.
Tillman said relocations for the $68 million dam could create some delays, though he hopes an early start can keep the schedule moving.
